Networks and Telecommunications BMGT 301 Spring 2009 Prof. Don Riley 1 What is a computer network? ! A collection of computers and peripherals, interconnected using communications channels . – LAN – WAN ! So, what is a communication channel? 2 Communications Channels ! Path over which data travels ! Created using transmission medium (pipe) Cabled media or Wireless media ! Travels as a signal type: analog vs. digital ! Channel has a transmission rate ( bandwidth ) ! Transmission mode: Asynchronous vs synchronous ! Channel has a transmission direction capability 3 Physical Channel: Cabled Media Twisted pair (100 Mbps) Coaxial cable (140Mbps) Fiber-optic cable (10s of Gbps) 4 Transmission Rate ! Popular Usage: Bandwidth indicates capacity of channel ! Digital: Measured in bits per second (bps, Kbps, Mbps, Gbps, ….) ! Analog : Measured in hertz (Hz, KHz, MHz, GHz….) ! What is a T-carrier? – A very high speed channel for use as the backbone of a network and for point-to-point connection of locations. – e.g. T-1 (1.5 Mbps), T-3 (6.3 Mbps), T-5 (44.7 Mbps) 5 A Primer on Bits 6
