Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to understand through hardness and visualization the effects heating treating and rapid cooling on samples of steel. First two samples of steels a non-treated and a heat treated sample that had been quenched were tested in the Rockwell hardness machine. Secondly four different samples were viewed under a microscope to view the effects the heat treating has on the microstructure of the steel. Results: Test # Non-Treated Quenched 1 121.1 127.7 2 121.3 126.9 3 122 127.2 Average 121.467 127.267 From the Rockwell testing the Quenched samples have a higher hardness rating. From these results the quenched sample has a higher yield and tensile strength but is more brittle. Items for Lab Notes: 1.
