Geo Sci Review – Volcanoes  1. What are volcanoes?   Volcanoes are places where magma erupts reaches the surface and turns into multan rocks.  2. What are volcanic eruptions? Volcanic eruptions occur when magma erupts and that can happen in two different ways. Passive  eruption (Hawaiian) where basalt rock –dark, comes from and explosive eruption (hunga tonga) where  andesite (light rock, granite) comes from.  3. Compare and contrast the eruptive characteristicsof shield and strato volcanoes. Shield volcanoes are Hawaiian like shaped like an arc,  have passive eruption  producing basalt. Strato volcanoes are explosive producing andestie and are have a pointed top  (tonga).  4. What is the basic structure and composition of the Earth? Liquid outer core = water Mantle = solid (S waves, most volume)  5. Does Plate Tectonics explain where volcanoes occur?
