SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH Theory Research Action Sociological theory asks the big questions: 1. What is society? 2. What causes social change? 3. Why is there injustice/inequality? 4. How is the individual related to others? 5. How does one approach the study of society (sociology)? The original schools Conflict Functionalism Symbolic interaction And views the original schools missed: race and gender RESEARCH : An attempt to develop knowledge based on “empirical”—evidence from the real world Why do we do it? Research helps us validate some of the theories Who’s approach is more valid: Marx or Weber Babbie: the importance of social research o Everything is not as it seems o Accused of just proving common sense things, prove the obvious o Sometimes the “common wisdom” (obvious) is wrong o Social research—to find out what seems to be true, if it is true o Validate theory, and prove/disprove common assumption More interesting to disprove What about yours? Outcomes o Specific results of your study: recruiting on the diag o Slow walkers—more likely to stop, some things are intuitve The process(es) Some interesting questions Do I believe what I see o Am I able to make the empirical data to a higher data Do I see what I believe o Sometimes researchers see what they already believe have to look out for it o Selectively see what they want to see in what they already believe in Reflexivity: what bias’s do I have, do what we can to believe in what we see My motivation: knowledge or change? (describe, explain, act) Just collecting knowledge or am I working for change? At the diag—wanted to collect knowledge objectively Marx: leaning in the notion of change, subjectively Weber: just collecting knowledge, objectively My approach: 1

Positivism —objective: uncovering natural laws. Relies heavily on objective on natural science. I can see it, I can believe it. Marx (Diag because we didn’t talk to them) Vershtehen —subjective, understanding the experience of the subjects. Weber My Epistemology? Is science the servant of the dominant culture? Lessons from feminism Post-modernism o Epistemology : the study/science of knowledge High epistemology—believes we can learn things with a high degree of confidence Thinkers in the enlightenment had high epistemology. Believed that science can tell us the truth and really high degree of confidence in what science taught us Someone who did experiment at diag would say—now we understand the diag! Low epistemology—someone doubtful that we discover in absolute truth. Approach knowledge and the way we gather knowledge is flawed, and we can’t generate the way we get knowledge Someone who did an experiment at diag would say—no we don’t know all about the diag o One of the questions that goes with this is that some people feel that science doesn’t have the objectivity to create truth that isn’t tainted or influenced by our culture o
