Lecture 10 Notes New institutional theory Organizations are everywhere; everything you do in one way or another takes place in an organization Ex) protest to graduate on the DIAG and not EMU; group of people with some particular goal form an organization to accomplish this goal Look at goals and how they are established Generally assumed that goal of organization is to make money We cannot always assume that just because there is an apparent goal, that it is actually their goal Ex) gov’t agencies: purpose of defense apt is to defend US against foreign invaders; one thing you want is resources--your org will gain resources to the extent that people funding think it is important; importance of defense apt is higher during war, get more funding Ex) goal of university: to educate students?, to generate grant money? Organization forms to accomplish specific goal, is successful, what happens to org after it solves the problem? Ex) YMCA
