Lecture 22 4/7/09 What were wwI and wwII about anyway?--a lot of what is driving it is economic Globalization has primarily been in one direction--US outward Underdeveloped now referred to as emerging markets Countries need to move from traditional value systems to modern value systems Underdeveloped has to do with the fact that they have cultures that aren't conducive to modernization---they have characteristics that lead to them being underdeveloped Countries might prefer to keep rest of the world underdeveloped--led to dependency theory Map-The darker the green, the more you are the core Core: center of world Periphery: smaller, underdeveloped Core countries dominate economically, politically, and militarily Keep it underdeveloped: theory of comp adv suggests that the countries should specialize in a particular product for which they are specifically well suited Single crop produced specifically for export Kept things cheap by ensuring that underdeveloped only produced single crop
