Psychology of Personality 02:40 Freud - Defense mechanisms are  unconscious , and  costly  because they require  permanent investments of energy by the Ego – if you ever stop a defense  mechanism, the anxiety will come back Repression – repress disturbing thought or feeling – most common Denial/fantasy – Misperceive what is going on around you. Fantasy =  believing things are more wonderful than they actually are; Denial =  pretending things aren’t true Undoing – Trying to make up for something bad that you did/thought/felt in the  past Rationalization – Finding excuses for bad behavior/thoughts/feelings Intellectualization – A kind of rationalization; splitting off the thoughts from the  feelings Displacement – Taking unacceptable thoughts/feelings that belong on one  target and displacing them to another target Sublimation – Taking negative energy/thoughts/feelings and using them for
