Unformatted text preview: SYLLABUS—FALL 2010 ACTSC 231(001 &002) — MATHEMATICS OF FINANCE Instructor: Dr. Chengguo Weng, MC6013, ext.31132, [email protected] Classes: 01:30pm-02:20pm MWF, RCH 101 (Section001) 03:30pm-04:20pm MWF, MC4061 (Section002) Tutorials: 02:30pm-03:20pm T, MC 2065 and MC2066 (both sections) Office hours: 2:40pm-3:30pm MWF, or by appointment (Instructor) TBA (Teaching Assistants) Pre-requisites: MATH137/147 Co-requisite: STAT230 Required Textbook: Mathematical Interest Theory (second edition), Daniel and Vaaler, 2009. This text is recommended for exam FM by the SOA. Calculator: Some questions on the assignments, quizzes and final exam are designed so that you need a financial calculator (we recommend BA-II Plus from Texas Instruments) to answer correctly. BA-II Plus calculator is eligible for SOA exams. We might illustrate some examples with BA-II Plus calculator in class. It is your responsibility to make sure you have access to a financial calculator. If you use a calculator other than BA-II Plus, it is your possibility to figure out how to use it for calculation we involve throughout the course. Material to be covered (see the attached table for the weekly tentative schedule): Chapter 1 The growth of money Chapter 2 Equations of value and yield rates Chapter 3: Sections 3.1-3.10, 3.12 Annuities Chapter 4: Sections 4.1-4.3, 4.6 More Annuities Chapter 5: Sections 5.1-5.4 Loan repayment Chapter 6: Sections 6.1-6.6, 6.9 Bonds Chapter 8: Section 8.3 Term Structure of Interest Rates Chapter 9 Interest Rate Sensitivity Homework: There will be three assignments due in the Friday’s classes of Weeks 3, 6 and 10 respectively. Homework must be well written. Late work without a legitimate excuse will not be accepted. This policy will be enforced strictly. Quizzes: There will be three quizzes, scheduled during the Tuesday’s tutorial session (from 2:30pm to 3:20pm) on October 5, October 26 and November 22. The exam rooms will be announced when the exam is approaching. Quizzes are non-cumulative. Tutorials: There will be eight tutorials; see attached table for the schedule. Tutorials will be conducted by Teaching Assistants. Before each tutorial, you will be given a set of problems to work out of class.
