Select a percentage (e.g., 10%, 70%) and discuss your reasoning. The group average of an outsider being able to discern the underlying cultural values of an organization is 21.25%. When an individual looks at an organization he sees the persona that the organization wants people to see. However, if an outsider possesses good observational skills along with a keen business sense could grasp substantially more than someone who did not possess those skills. 2 On the surface are visible artifacts and observable behaviors—the ways people dress and act, the type of control systems and power structures used by the company, and the symbols, stories, and ceremonies organization members share. However, only when you are on the inside can you see the truth of an organization. Even for an insider it may take years to get a true assessment of the organization because an individual may not be privy to every part of the organization. When a person works for an organization for several years that individual becomes a part of the culture of the organization that he/she is a member of. However, outsiders do not have the intimate knowledge that insiders possess. For example, Wal-Mart is attempting to show it’s consumers that they are environmentally conscious by creating “green” stores.
