Select a social problem that is important to you. Explain how this problem is socially constructed. What contributes to this social problem? What elements of society contribute to this problem, and how can it be alleviated? How is this problem perpetuated today? One of the social problems that is important to me is the use of alcohol. The social construct of the problem starts in high school for some and as early as middle school for others. A social construction is a way of noticing or pondering about a problem that is created collectively (Sternheimer K, 2014). The population of the town that I live in is approximately 22,000 and there are three liquor stores in this small town, not to mention the number of gas stations and convenient stores that sell alcoholic beverages. The fact that drinking is legal and, in most places, permissible is a factor in the contribution to this problem. Also, because most of society does not recognize this as a disease and potentially dangerous problem.
