Stephanie Lee November 21, 2010 Stats 10: Disc. 2D-Mine 1: Summarize the question being answered or the problem being solved in the lab. In this lab, we compared the distribution of ages for pennies to the sampling distribution of mean ages for pennies to illustrate the Central Limit Theorem. 2: Briefly describe the data and study type. Through an observational study, in which data of the ages of pennies were collected from stu- dents in previous quarters of Stat 10, we examined the sample distribution and sampling distribu- tion of means of various sample sizes to see the Central Limit Theorem at work. 3: Briefly describe the analysis techniques you applied. Using the data set collected from previous quarters of Stat 10 and considering it to be a popula- tion, we simulated many samples of the same size in order to build up a sampling distribution of means and then repeated this process for several sample sizes to see the effect of sample size on the sampling distribution of means. 4: Provide a conclusion in plain language. When we take all possible samples of the same size, we observe that the mean of the distribution of sample means equals the mean of the original population and that the standard deviation of the distribution of sample means is equal to the standard deviation of the population divided by the square root of the sample size. However oftentimes this is difficult to do in real life, so in order to observe a sampling distribution with the lowest spread and sampling mean closest to the actual proportion mean, we take a larger sample size. 5: Describe a real world decision that might be influenced by your conclusion.
