Stephanie Lee October 19, 2010 Stats 10: Disc. 2D-Mine 1: Summarize the question being answered or the problem being solved in the lab. In this lab, we examined whether the outcomes from Hill’s study are dependent on the treatment administered and whether there was a significant difference in outcomes of survival between the control and Streptomycin groups. 2: Briefly describe the data and study type. Through an experimental study in which Hill randomly assigned 55 of the 107 patients to receive the treatment Streptomycin and the other 55 patients only bed rest (control group), we sought to make conclusions about cause-and-effect by comparing actual results to a chance model. 3: Briefly describe the analysis techniques you applied. We first measured the actual (or observed) difference between the control and treatment groups and then we compared the actual result to the results from a simulated chance model in Fathom to see whether this actual difference could have happened solely by chance or whether it is signi- ficantly large enough that another explanation is plausible . 4: Provide a conclusion in plain language. In comparing the actual result to the results from a simulated chance model, we see that the actu- al difference between the control group and treatment is significant enough for us to conclude that Streptomycin is a better treatment than just bed rest and that the antibiotic leads to more re-
