Lindsey Ahn IR 210 Lecture Notes Lecture 12: February 18, 2010 The ‘clash of civilizations’ thesis is a Gimmick like the ‘war of the worlds’ better for reinforcing defensive self-pride than for critical understanding of the bewildering interdependence of our times.” Edward Said The clash of civilization suggests that we have monopolistic civilizations Learning Objectives - Cultural world – three dimensions o Traditional culture o Political culture o Popular culture o Controversies/issues Question for discussion: Why would someone move from being a state nationalist to an ethno- nationalist separatist? - The structural violence; poverty, lack of education – that hits their particular community o I’m denied education and resources because I am a ______ & the other ________ are taking the majority of what should be offered to me - The state doesn’t represent _____’s interest because… o The ________s have different ways of life; culture, language, etc - Identity crisis: - If you’re being scapegoated – the rest of the nation is blaming you for the world’s problems - General intolerance – prejudice These can summon tensions & ideas to create a new nation-state or break off from the one ______s were in before How is globalization contributed to this question? 1.
