Study Guide for IR 360 midterm 04:40 Essay Questions 1.  American Idealism started with Truman shifting from FDR “self-determination”  to military containment/rollback with NSC-68 o Creation of South East Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) possibly  modeled after NATO o Washington’s centered “hub-and-spoke system” Proliferation and bilateral defense treaties o With Sino-Soviet relations, US increases support for Japan, Taiwan, and  anti-communist governments in SEA After ASEAN was formed, many Asian countries had their own political and  domestic motives differing from traditional American ideologies  o Could argue against this as well because of ASEAN plus 3 (bringing back  US into fold) With the growth of China and their relationship with North Korea, many SEA  countries still relay on the US to counterbalance both China’s rapid growth  and North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear weapons Declining American Idealism in East Asia o American engagement in East Asia in the 1940s was influence by  American idealistic lenses o But after WWII, the USA gradually disengaged from Asia o Washington’s decreased support for Chiang Kai-shek reflected its desire  of disengagement o The USA was pulling troops out of South Korea after 1945 East Asia: (American half-hearted support for the Nationalists)     In 1949 – Dean Acheson publicly excluded South Korea from the  American “defense perimeter” in the Pacific (Syngman Phee’s regime  was expendable?) June 1950: North Korea invasion of South Korea (ROC) hardened the  US containment policy around the globe The Korean War strengthened Sino-Soviet alliance and China’s  intervention to assist the North Korean co comrades inspired other  communist movements like Viet Minh (Ho Chi Minh) (Nick Bisley: “Empire nor Republic: American Power….” Course Reader) this  mentions a bit about American Idealism
