Growing Leaders What Is Leadership? What Makes A Leader Great? References What Is Leadership? " Leaders are born, not made." "Managers manage things; leaders lead people." "The most successful people have the mind of a manager and the heart of a leader." These are just a few quotes I remember hearing as I studied leadership. The ideas are taken from various readings, studies, and class lectures, and cannot really be attributed to one particular person. They may be general axioms, but I would question if they are widely accepted. Getting a handle on the concept, definition, or framework of leadership is not simple. You will see in your readings this week that leadership can be scientifically measured and analyzed; yet, that intangible and perhaps individual attribute that makes great leaders is ambiguous. It can be visible, yet unseen. While you read about the theories and studies of leadership, I want to take a moment to add my thoughts. There are thousands of books, studies, and articles written about leadership. Organizations in many industries and services spend billions of dollars
