Deconstruction a. Evaluation Plan for today 1/25/11 Giving an argument is giving reasons for believing some claim. We do this all the time: Virginia Tech will win the National title this year, because they have the best defense, and defense wins championships. What most shoppers care about is low prices and convenience. Thats why ONeals is the best grocery store around. Dont bother with philosophical training. Rational argument and critical thinking arent valued by society. What is an argument? 1/25/11 Argument = a structured series of statements aimed at establishing some conclusion Structured the parts bear logical relations to each other Establish when properly constructed they show by rational and logical force that some other statement is true Parts = premises and conclusions Both are statements = truth-evaluable sentences All cats are mammals. All dogs have 4 legs. Different from questions, exclamations, commands Is there cheese in the fridge? Eeeew, lima beans! What is an argument?...
