Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic DisordersSchizophrenia is a complex, lifelong mental disorder characterized by delusions, hallucinations, and disorganization of behavior and thought (APA, 2013). For criteria purposes, clients who are diagnosed experience these symptoms for at least six months and continue to be present for the remainder of their lives. The first diagnosis of the disorder tends to occur within the teen and young adult years and, most of the time, present as a psychotic break. The learner will utilize this paper to discuss a client diagnosed with schizophrenia, highlighting the presentation of illness along with a comprehensive plan for treatment.HPI and Clinical ImpressionHM is a 48-year-old Hispanic male under the care of a psychiatrist in the behavioral health clinic. His partner reports recent exacerbation of psychotic symptoms, including audio hallucinations and delusions. With a history of schizophrenia, the client admits to episodes wherehe speaks to himself, which was also witnessed during the visit. Rendering of history from the client was pretty limited; however, partner details client experience persecutory delusions believing the neighbors are spying on him with items inside his house. She mentions that recently client has begun to hide household items in efforts to "maintain privacy." The client voices concern to the provider that neighbors have always been "too nosey" and that "they are whispering about me" during the night, which has resulted in paranoia and insomnia. The client during assessment is nonattentive which is evident by his inability to maintain conversation without bringing up delusions or hallucinations. He manifests a restricted affect. No agitation or distress noted. Appearance disheveled. The client refutes alcohol or drug use though he reveals that he is a smoker. There is a known history of positive drug screening for methamphetamine
