CHEMISTRY 120A - Inorganic Chemistry Sections : Section A01 Monday 6:00-6:50 pm WLH 2208 Section A02 Monday 7:00-7:50 pm WLH 2208 TA: Treffly Ditri Office Hours: 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays Pacific Hall Room 4100H Handout #1: (5-5-2010) Symmetry and Group Theory: Symmetry Elements and Symmetry Operations: Identity Operation ( E ) -Causes no change on the molecule. Needed for the mathematical completeness of the group. All molecules contain the identity operation. Proper rotation: ( C n ) -A rotation through 360 o /n about a rotation axis. - C n when there is a rotation axis perpendicular to the principle axis that passes through several atoms is the molecule. - C n ’’ when there is a rotation axis perpendicular to the principle axis that passes between outer atoms. Inversion ( i ) -Inversion of all Atoms through a center. Reflection Operation: (σ) -The molecule contains a mirror plain.

Unformatted text preview: v or d the mirror plain is along the principle axis of the molecule. h the mirror plain is perpendicular to the principle axis of the molecule. Improper Rotation or Rotation-Reflection Operation ( S n ) -A rotation 360 o /n followed reflection through a plane perpendicular to the axis rotation. Two S n operations in succession generate a C n/2 . An S 2 operation is the same as inversion. An S 1 operation is the same as a reflection. Point Groups and Group Theory: -Each molecule has a set of symmetry operations that describes the molecules overall symmetry, this set of symmetry operations is called a point group. -Group theory, the mathematical treatment of properties of groups, can be used to determine the molecular orbitals, vibrations and other properties of the molecule.
