Group 5.1 Chapter 51: Animal Behavior A behavior is the interface of physiology and the environment. It is important because it helps an animal find mates, obtain food, and maintain homeostasis. In behavioral ecology, a signal is a behavior that causes a change in another animal’s behavior. An animal’s behavior is based on many psychological systems and processes. An animal’s behavior is the sum of its responses to external and internal stimuli. Scientists decided to study how animals behave in their natural environments (ethology). They ask many questions which fall into the proximate (how) causation and ultimate (why) causation. These two subjects underlie behavioral ecology. There are fixed action patterns (unchangeable acts) triggered by a sign stimulus. Some animals rely on a kinesis (a change in activity related to stimulus) or taxis which takes them toward or away from a stimulus. Some migrate, regularly long distance - changing their location Some animals link their behavior to the light and darkness of their surrounding, or the time/season. Animals transmit signals to one another and communicate through the reception of certain signals. Communication between animals can be through any of the five senses; some involve emitting
