In this article 3M is debating about the initiative to include lead user research in 3M’s legendary innovation process. • The premise behind lead user research is that some customers experience new needs before other customers, and it would be valuable to tap into these customers and use them as sources for innovation before they themselves solve their needs on their own, hence the term “lead user”. • There are 4 stages in the lead user methodology used at 3M: Project Planning, Trends/Needs Identification, Preliminary Concept Generation, and Final Concept Generation • In the Project Planning stage, teams identified the types of markets and new products of interest, and the desired level of innovation. • The Needs/Trend Identification stage required the team to pick a specific need- related trend to focus on for the rest of the study.
