OR Mass Media are sources that bring information to the masses or general public Frequently expressed concerns about the Mass Media . • It is shallow • It’s superficial, lacks depth • It creates the illusion of knowledge • It results in pressures on govt by groups that are sometimes not well informed. • Talk radio is entertainment not news • It too frequently misrepresents the facts Was it misrepresentation? • Many believed that - there was evidence of links between al-Qaeda & Iraq- WMD had been found in Iraq- World public opinion favored the US going to war w/Iraq Media is Big Business • Only 1 major newspaper -CSM remains independent- All other major newspapers & natl radio & TV owned by major conglomerates o 10 conglomerates, such as Time-Warner, Disney, Viacom, GE, etc own the major newspapers, leading news magazines, Natl TV networks, publishing houses, movie studios, etc Implications- Commercial bias - scandal, crime, sports, etc: o If it sells it jells o Large audiences earn advertising $- Resultant reduction of political news-...
