Cover Letters Avoid gimmicks, overuse of the word “I”, overly praiseworthy of yourself, generic language Purpose: communicate key themes in a specific personalized message to a particular person Key Content: career objective, communicate key skills, generate themes, paragraphs should be 3-6 sentences in length Paragraph 1: Why are you writing? -Mention specific job -Convince reader you understand company’s needs -Communicate thorough self-assessment values, interests and skills Paragraph 2/3: Why you versus someone else? -Describe education and professional experience -Use company research to describe your ability to address opportunities/problems Final paragraph: Initiate the next step -Outline follow-up strategy -Phone calls -More personal the contact, the more accurate the information Interpersonal Communications in an Effective Job Search Informational Interviews: -Get inside information, others to contact, prepare (research, questions), tips for success Networking: -Source of information about jobs -Making useful contacts -Learn about career fields
