Race and Ethnicity – Selected Information Ch 8 p 223-242 and 250-253 Defining Race and Ethnicity Race – group of people who are perceived by others to share biological characteristics Ethnicity – Shared cultural heritage, which typically involves common ancestors, language, and religion Can be difficult to distinguish between race and ethnicity Race is a matter of perception Race is socially constructed “Although there is no such thing as biological race, races are real insofar as they are socially defined . In other words, racial categories operate as if they are real” (original emphasis, Eitzen 220). Society defines which differences are important (skin color) and which aren’t (hair color) Definitions Dominant group Minority group Racial stratification (hierarchy) These terms are dependent on who holds power, NOT who has numerical majority.
