People can and will judge you on your GSP GSP counts for every assignment in this class Without proper GSP, writing is difficult to read and understand Texting language is NOT allowed for assignments 1/27/11 Punctuation 1/27/11 Comma Nonessential clauses Use to offset nonessential clauses Use which for nonessential clauses and that for essential clauses 1/27/11 Comma Nonessential clauses We went to the zoo, which was awesome. We went to the zoo that was in San Diego. Down here 1/27/11 Comma Essential clauses Do not use commas with essential clauses Because does not usually need a comma We stayed inside because it was raining. But Because it was raining, we stayed inside. 1/27/11 Commas - I ndependent clauses Used when two complete sentences are joined by a conjunction I was happy to be in Florida, and I was excited about going to Disney World. 1/27/11 Comma - Ser ies For series My sandwich consists of bread, mayonnaise, turkey, and tomato. 1/27/11 Semicolon Can be used in a series when a comma is part of an item within the series Yesterday, I went to a movie, which was good; filled up on popcorn; and watched SNL. Can be used to join two related independent clauses that are not joined by a conjunction UF, Texas Tech, and Dallas Cowboys won last weekend; it was awesome. 1/27/11 Colon Used after a complete introductory clause for another clause of phrase There are two former UF football head coaches who are still head coaches: Ron Zook and Steve Spurrier. If the following phrase is a complete sentence, the first word of the following phrase needs to be capitalized I have a philosophy on punctuality: If youre early, youre on time; if youre on time, youre late; and if youre late, dont even 1/27/11 Colon Do not use if the initial phrase is not a complete sentence The objectives of the mission were land on the moon and return from the moon.
