Chapter 1 WHY WOMEN’S HEALTH? -Education about women is the door through which women can be empowered -Information about the status of women must be made public -The health of a community rests on the health and well-being of its women and children, not just men. HEALTH PROMOTION The concept of health promotion is not limited to the idea that health is a condition we lose from time to time and try to gain back, but rather, health promotion includes the idea that health is something to be nurtured and by doing so we can prevent the onset of much illness and disease. Three types of Health Action: -Proactive care : involves designing and living a lifestyle that reduces the risks of illness, and improves current health status. - prevention, avoids treatment -holistic lifestyle model opposed to medical -Health care maintenance : continuation of what one is doing to maintain one’s current health status -Reactive care : treatment of any illness, disorder, or disease that may develop -medical model, attends to individual’s needs after unhealthy condition has developed
