Basic Concepts: Sampling Example: Hazing in fraternities o Probability sample We have a complete list of fraternity members Randomly select n students from each fraternity Basic Concepts: The IRB All universities have Internal Review Boards (IRBs) made up of academics from diverse fields to ensure that researchers follow professional and ethical guidelines IRBs review research projects to make sure htat the expected benefits of the research outweigh any potential harm to research participants Examples of Unethical Research o Humphries’ “tearoom trade” (1970) o Tuskegee Syphilis experiment (1932 – 1972) Two Major Social Research Methods Two general approaches to social research include qualitative and quantitative methods 1. Qualitative methods include any method that focuses on modes of observation and/or interviewing. 2. Quantitative methods include any method that attempts to quantify people’s thoughts, feelings, or behavior.
