Lesson 2 Question 1 What are the key preconditions of the Holocaust as identified by Bergen, Katz, and Friedlander? In Bergen’s first chapter she describes the preconditions of the Holocaust as “a substantial part of the [German] population had to be ready to consider it desirable, acceptable, or at least unavoidable that certain people would be isolated, persecuted and killed” (1). She notes that hatred alone will not spark a genocide such as the Holocaust, leadership, political will and propaganda or “manipulation of popular sentiments” (2). All these things must be used together in order to racially divide a country and drive the majority toward “racial purification”. Jacob Katz’s argument is that modern anti-Semitism stems from the Christian churches, painting the Jews as Christ killers and non-believers. Katz says the “weakening of Christian faith in modern times also weakened belief in the redeemability of the Jews, opening the door to mass murder. Niewyk seems to struggle with justifying Katz’s preconditions, as do I. Friedlander’s points out that the first people to be killed by the Nazi’s were physically and mentally handicapped Germans. Then came Gypsies along with Jews. His argument is that eugenics played a major part in the mass murder of many different people. This way, Hitler and the Nazi party could eliminate “racially undesirable” groups so that they don’t infect the Aryan race with their “defective genes”(11) Question 5 Which author do you agree with most and why? Do you prefer a mono-causal explanation or do you think that it is more convincing to evaluate a series of reasons and preconditions? How would you then determine the significance of individual factors? I agree with Bergen and Friedlander the most, I think both of them, throughout the books provided in this course, have consistently evaluated the different sides of the Holocaust and explained them extremely well. I think its serves more of a purpose to evaluate a series of reasons and preconditions in order to understand the complexity of the situation. To determine the significance of individual factors, I would weigh them against other authors ideas as well as ones that I have formed over my time studying the Holocaust.

Lesson 3 Question 2 Doris Bergen points out that Hitler did not start his “social revolution” with radical anti- Jewish measures but adopted increasingly radical methods over the course of the 1930s. What accounts for this apparent shift? How does this step fit in with the Nazis' worldview? Hitler was an intelligent, calculated and evil dictator who knew that the public opinion of him in Germany and the World must not be negative, at least in the beginning.
