The stock market (which had been growing for years and years) began its decline in the summer and early fall months of 1929, resulting in a panic that led to a huge stock sell-off in late October. In just one month, the market had lost almost 40 percent of its total value. Even though there was only a small percentage of Americans that had invested in the stock market, the crash affected everyone. The banks lost millions and foreclosed on business and personal loans. This pressured customers to pay back their loans, whether they had the cash or not. As the pressure grew for the individuals, the effects of the crash continued to spread. The horrible state of the international economy, the unfair income distribution in the United States, and the contagious feeling of panic during the crash all played a role in the harsh downward spiral of the economy at the time. Right after the crash, the government was still confident that the economy would find a way to bounce back to its original state. Instead, several factors led it to only get worse.
