EVPP 111 Lecture Learning & Study Guide #18 Spring 2010 Air Quality Issues – Ozone Depletion In what part of the atmosphere is the protective layer of ozone located? Stratosphere.  About what percentage of the sun's harmful UV radiation is kept from reaching the earth's  surface by the stratospheric ozone layer? 99 What is the "ozone hole" and when and where does it occur? It just means that in some  areas of stratosphere, the Ozone concentration is less.   Also, it means the seasonal loss,  thinning, of ozone. It occurs in Antarctica and Arctic the most.  What are the possible consequences of the depletion of stratospheric ozone? Threats to  humans, many other animals,  primary producers. It irritates respiratory tissue, causes  permanent lung damage, damages plants. Reduces agricultural yield.  What are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)?  Chlorofluorocarbons : Chemical compound  known by trade name – Freons.  – CFC-11 (trichloromethane, CCl3F) – CFC-12 (dichlorodifluoromethane, CCl2F2) Why were the CFCs originally called "dream chemicals"? because it was not reactive,  odorless, nonflammable, nontoxic, noncorrosive.   What are some of the uses of CFCs?  coolants in air conditioners and refrigerators replacing toxic sulfur dioxide and ammonia propellants in aerosol spray cans cleaners for electronic parts (computer chips) sterilants for hospital instruments • fumigants for granaries and ship cargo holds
