Unformatted text preview: 17/02/2009 13:02:00 ← Ishwara • A single, divine being • A supreme purusha • Transcendent being • All-knowing OM • Ishwara is OM • OM is brahman • Ishwara is brahman • Ishwara means personal brahman ← ← Thoughts do not reach there – If your mind can only fathom the objects of prakriti, then how do you fix your mind on a thought of concentrating on God? – Yoga tells us how. ← ← Japa – repetition of a sacred sound ← But isn’t OM also just a prakritic sound? ← ← Ex: Iron ball of fire – 2 completely different physical things, if you put iron in the fire, the iron takes on all the qualities of fire – it become fire by being pervaded by it – so is the same with OM – Ishwara pervades OM – becomes “Ishwar-ized” – the mind, then, touching that sound [by hearing it and creating a samskara ] divinizes OM ← ← Mantras are the most common way of practicing meditation. ← ← Deities • Deity – NOT idol – idol has bad connotation – Murti is best • If a sound, OM, can be “Ishwar-ized”, why can’t objects like stone?
