Unformatted text preview: chapter 1 meditative absorption 24/02/2009 22:16:00 Yoga cessation of citta vrtti , the fluctuating states of mind Sutra aphorism or extremely succinct verse Om namo bhagvate Vasudevaya said to remove both obstacles and personal ego Vyasa primary commentator on the Yoga Sutras The goal of yoga is not to join, but to disconnect purusa from prakrti. When the mind is directed toward an object, five degrees of focus ( bhumis ): o Wondering o Confused o Distracted o Concentrated o Restrained When Citta = concentrated + restrained, samprajnata-samadhi is attained (P12) Yogah citta vrtti nirodhah ; Yoga is the stilling of the changing states of mind. Patanjali Yoga is the stilling of all thought Nirodhah- cessation Vrtti permutations or activities Citta 3 cognitive functions: o Budhi intelligence Most important aspect of the citta The liason between purusa [pure awareness] and physical/ psychic objects of which purusa can be aware o Ahankara ego Causes notion of I-ness The reason why an ants awareness is little compared to a humans; the result of a specific set of samskaras bug, animal, human activating at the appropriate time o Manas mind Organizes sensory input and directs the senses o *If citta is referred to the mind, it is for simplicitys sake. Weve had the same citta since forever. The only diff. between each lifes citta is the samskaras that cover it. The citta has to accommodate itself to a new form more/less satva, rajas tamas ex: if you become a dog, your awareness is limited. Animals DONT make new karma . They burn up karma created in a human life. Kleshas are situated in the citta . They are destroyed when the citta is destroyed. The citta is destroyed in the life in which you become liberated and your body goes back to prakriti . The soul, in short ,is neither the physical body in which it is encased nor the mind that exhibits psychic functions. It is pure autonomous consciousness The soul appears to undergo the experiences of the body and mind but these are mere transformations of the body and mind This misidentification, or ignorance, is therefore the root of bondage to the world (P24) Tada drastuh svarupe avasthanam ; When that is accomplished, the seer abides in its own true nature. Who is the seer? Aatman. Gunas [refer to sheet] Inherent in prakrti Present in varying proportions in all manifest reality Sattva causes attachment to happiness knowledge, upon death reaching worlds of those who know the highest (rise upward), foods are savory/ agreeable/ hearty/ vegetarian, sacrifice is duty, charity w/o expectation of return, sees indestructible state of being in all creatures, restrained action w/o attachment/ desire/ hatred/ result, understanding when and when not to act, etc.result, understanding when and when not to act, etc....
