Shashank Gupta Writing in Professions Paragraph 09/20/09 Problem Definition Paper Food Wastage at Rutgers Dining Halls Despite global hunger issues, food is being wasted in American households. Food wastage in U.S. households is a growing problem in America. This food is wasted for two major reasons; either the food has expired or it has been left over from a previous meal. According to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency’s waste characterization report, 11.2% of all municipal solid waste was comprised of food waste in 2002 (Johnson, 1). A study from the University of Arizona shows that U.S. households throw away 40% to 50% of all food ready to harvest (Coles, 12). There is so much food wasted that the federal government estimates the nation spends more than $1 billion per year to dispose of food waste (Johnson, 1). According to Coles estimates, $590 is tossed out in garbage as food waste by the U.S. households every year. This adds up to $43 billion annually, making it a very serious economic issue (Johnson, 1). Not only is this a problem in U.S. households, but American universities also waste enormous
