Shashank Gupta Writing in Professions Paragraph 09/20/09 Problem Definition Paper Food Wastage at Rutgers Dining Halls Despite global hunger issues, food is being wasted in American households. Food wastage in the U.S. households is one of the many growing problems in America. Food is wasted for two major reasons; either the food has expired or it has been left over from a previous meal. According to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency’s waste characterization report, 11.2% of all municipal solid waste was comprised of food waste (Johnson, 1). A study from the University of Arizona shows that U.S. households throw away 40% to 50% of all food ready to harvest (Coles, 12). There is so much food waste in the U.S. that the federal government estimates that nation spends more than $1 billion per year on disposing of food waste (Johnson, 1). According to Coles estimates, $590 is tossed out in garbage as food waste by the U.S. households every year. This adds up to $43 billion annually making it a very serious economic issue (Johnson, 1).
