WSJ: Boeing Brings in Old Hands, Gets an Earful   By Peter Sanders  Of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL 18 July 2010 RENTON, Wash.-- In its quest to get the beleaguered 787 Dreamliner program back on track and chart a course  for the coming decade, aircraft maker Boeing Co. (BA) has turned to an unlikely source: engineering icons from its  past. The mission of these retired elder statesmen is to brainstorm with current Boeing engineers and project managers.  But their advice often comes packaged in blunt terms that reflect their willingness to call things as they see them. (This story and related background material will be available on The Wall Street Journal Web site, WSJ.com.) As a result, Boeing's past managers occasionally have been derided as "bean counters," and engineers on a failed  project have been jestingly accused of "smoking marijuana." That's language not often heard in the buttoned-down  Boeing empire. Ahead of the big annual Farnborough air show that begins Monday in England, one of the Boeing veterans' tasks  has been to determine how the company should proceed with some of its best-selling jetliners. One idea they have thrown cold water on is the use of open-rotor engines. In theory, such engines could boost fuel  efficiency and cut down on emissions, but they are extremely loud, and their safety hasn't been proved. "Have you ever seen an open-rotor design that looks like a real airplane?" asked Lars Andersen, a former program
