Riyakumari Jain Professor Humphries ENGL 1202-CH 30 January 2020 Discussion Assignment #2 The “Cathedral” is a short story published by Raymond Carver in 1983. In the short story, the main characters consisted of the husband (The Narrator), the wife, and the blind man, known as Robert. The husband’s wife was previously employed by Robert in Seattle and over time, the two became close friends and kept in contact with each other by exchanging audio tapes. The story illustrates the moment where Robert is visiting the husband and the wife’s house since he was in the same state, Connecticut, to visit his dead wife’s relatives. If going by the definition that a protagonist of a story, “undergoes some kind of transformation or change” (Mays 219-222), then the husband is the protagonist in the story. He is shown to be very judgmental, isolated, jealous, and prejudiced in the beginning but then goes through a unique experience and has character development which changes his behavior, thoughts, and feelings. He got married to his wife after she had a divorce with a military-officer after her suicide attempt. In the story, she is shown to be an outgoing and friendly woman and
