Emily Cole ANTH 2100 Chronicles of an American Suburb Film Review 7 Chronicles of an American Suburb depicts the creation of a planned community, Park Forest, located outside of Chicago. The story begins with World War II and the veterans who did not have a place to call home once they returned to America. Park Forest was built during this period, and soon catered to the needs of displaced veterans. The nuclear families were very close. The women stayed at home, and were highly active in such areas as community politics. Men commuted to Chicago every day. Children felt like they were growing up in “utopia.” Because the community was brand new, there was no established hierarchy at the onset. This led to a larger sense of comradery. The population was also able to create it’s own government. When Park Forest was first established, the inhabitants were empowered and felt in control of their own future. Eventually families were able to own their own homes, which led further to a sense of empowerment and the American Dream. Suburbs were a
