Foundations of Literacy Notes: Why not just memorize? Children develop their own natural system of understanding how words work. Scribbling is important for their development. 1. Emergent: scribbles, symbols 2. Letter name stage: using actual name sound of letter; confuse sounds, must convince them each letter has its own distinct sound. HARE = cherry JREBL = dribble IBWT = about DIDR = doctor HAREP = trip Why word study? Teaching is not telling. Children need to talk with one another to help with knowledge construction. It links words study to words being read. Teach words that students are learning in context with reading. Don’t come up with random spelling words. Teaches children how to look at words when they read and write. They will examine words and begin to look for patterns. Purpose? Regularities Patterns Principles/ phonics Specific knowledge of words Don’t’ call them rules: children believe you can’t break rules and phonics principles are only true 75% of the time. The basis? 5 developmental levels: Emergent Spelling: o A period of pretend writing o From scribbles to letters Letter name-Alphabetic Spelling o Spell in a linear, sound-by-sound fashion o Use the name of the letter as the sound o First beginning sounds and then ending sounds o By the end of this stage there is a vowel in each syllable Within word Pattern Spelling o They begin to examine long vowel patterns o They spell consonant blends and diagraphs correctly o They spell regular short vowel patterns Syllable juncture and Affixes o They begin to consider where syllables meet at their juncture o They examine polysyllable words and patterns Derivational o Students examine how words share common derivations and related roots A step back is a step forward. Roots and bases help spelling. Word study is developmental not “one size fits all” Otherwise frustration or boredom Where to begin?
