Emily Cole HIST 1060 Brian Price Terms Industrial Revolution occurred in the West between 1740 and the 20 th century. It was fueled by rapid population growth, the commercial revolution of the 17 th century, development in transportation, and an increase in agricultural productivity. There was great technological changes and a new application of machines to production processes. Charles Darwin came up with an evolutionary theory that helped advance theoretical science. Darwin championed survival of the fittest. Darwin’s theories competed against Christian ideals, and led to a weakening of Christian religious presence in the Western world. He also fashioned a more complex ideal of nature that pictures humans as animals. Charles Dickens was a novelist in the 19 th century. Writing in England, Dickens turned toward writing realistically about human life, instead of the newfound irrational approach favored by many of the time. Karl Marx was a German theorist who lauded socialism and thought of capitalism
