Emily Cole HIST 1060 Brian Price Simon Bólivar was a wealthy Creole officer during the movement for independence in northern South America. He was an ardent supporter of a republican form of government, and dispelled monarchy. Bólivar was also fearful of Federalism and popular democracies. Bólivar had much military skill, and his enthusiasm for independence allowed him to come out as a leader of the revolt against Spain. Between 1817 and 1822, Bólivar won a number of battles in Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. Events eventually led to the breakup of the Gran Colombia. Bólivar became scared of anarchy, but he also rejected all attempts to crown him as king. Le Guillotine was a method used to carry out death penalties, introduced by Joseph-Ignace Guillotin. During the Ancien Régime in France, the matter of execution was a very gruesome ordeal. With the introduction of the guillotine, many believed that this form of execution was much more humane.
