Emily Cole HIST 1060 Brian Price Terms, March 1 Classical liberalism is a political ideology, central to which is the liberty of individual citizens. Eventually liberalism would stress the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly. Classical liberalism developed heavily during the Enlightenment. John Locke and Adam Smith played pivotal roles. Adam Smith penned The Wealth of Nations , primarily about economic behavior. Smith put forth that people act in their own self-interest and promote general economic advancement through competition. Smith said that the government should not regulate commerce, instead relying on individual and market forces. In keeping with the times, Smith drew on rational thought. The Wealth of Nations also influenced the founders of the American governmental system. Frederick the Great ruled over Prussia. He was a champion of greater religious freedom, and worked on the expansion of state economic functions. Under Frederick the
