HIST Lecture Notes Lynching: What was lynching? Accusation/Why? Why upped in late 1880’s? Objections? Federal Government try against? Slavery ends April 9, 1865 --Overwhelming in Southern states --Domination: Not American Phenomenon People : --Accused of raping white women (mostly) --Looked straight in eyes of white women --Not stepping off sidewalk when whites walked Obsession : --In reality, almost no rape 1. Blacks= beasts --slavery= school for savages (civilizing institution); controlling animals 2. Payback: White males raped black women --Status of child was status of mother --Domestic servants= victims --Revenge on white men for having sex with black women 3. Last 3 rd of 19 th Century: Repression of sex of middle class white --Women on pedistal of purity/passionless --Men felt guilt for having sex with wives --Imagined black males were doing what white males couldn’t --Put desires on black males white outlet= young black women 4. Manhood through providing insulting to have working wife
