December 6, 2010 Reading Questions: Chapter 24 Spiral of Silence Theory 1. Who are the key Researchers of this theory? Elizabeth Noelle-Neumann 2. Discuss the following elements of the theory: a. History of this theory Mass media has a big influence on public opinion. It was noticed that the majority overshadows the minority view to the point where the minority is hesitant to share his views. The majority is more encouraged to speak. b. Key Terms (define them) The Train Test – asses the extent people will speak out. Those who do speak out have an influence over others. The Hard Core – Group of people who know that there is “a price to pay” for being assertive. c. Propositions/assumptions (list and discuss) Fear of isolation causes people to asses other opinions at all times. Pluralistic ignorance Public behavior affected by public opinion. Public behavior is speaking out or keeping silent. Humans are silent when their viewpoint does not match with the majority.
