September 20, 2010 Reading Questions: Chapter 2 Thinking About the Field: Traditions and Contexts 1. Identify and briefly summarize (in 2 – 3 sentences) each of the seven traditions in the communication field. Label each tradition and summarize in 2 – 3 sentences Rhetorical Tradition – relates to public speaking. It involves language and appealing to an audience. Semiotic Tradition – signs that we learn as they are passed down through generations. These signs may have different meanings when being used in different contexts. Phenomenological Tradition – trying to remove personal interpretation and personal bias from the interaction. A person’s beliefs shouldn’t influence the conversation. Cybernetic Tradition – involves information processing. It also involves the different ways the other people interpret messages. Socio-Psychological Tradition – says behaviors are influenced. Patterns of our behaviors also differ from depending on the person. Socio-Cultural Tradition – social groups have different ways of interactions. Social groups have unique “norms” that differ.
