September 27, 2010 Reading Questions: Chapter 3 Thinking About Theory and Research 1. Discuss the relationship between theory and experience. Theory is a process where concepts “with indications of the relationships among these concepts that help us to understand a phenomenon (p.46).” Experience is where you are going through something. Theories that have been developed can be tested by observing experiences. Through experiences, theories can also develop to explain those experiences that the researcher observes or undergoes. 2. Provide some examples of ways you think like a theorist in your daily life. In my daily life I go through different experiences. I am always trying to make sense of what I am going through. When I ponder on my experiences I create theories. For example whenever I interact with someone I theorize about why that person acts the way he or she acts. 3. Create a chart that lists everything you know about the Empirical, Interpretative and Critical approaches: Empirical:
