Introduction to Experimental Design and Analysis of Variance Example : Four different interior wall paints are advertised as having the same drying time. To check the manufacturers claim, five wall samples were tested for each of the paints. The time in minutes until the paint was dry enough for a second coat of paint to be applied was recorded. This is an example of an experimental statistical study. Experimental Studies : a response variable of interest is identified. Other variables are then controlled by the experimenter to see how they influ- ence the response variable. Observational Studies : make no attempt to control the variables of in- terest. Terminology Factor : The independent variable of interest. Ex : Treatment : Different levels of a factor. Ex : Single-factor experiment : An experiment involving only one factor with k treatments.
