Review and Examples Mean Median Mode Percentiles Quartiles Boxplot The American Association of Individual Investors conducted an annual survey of discount brokers. The commissions charged by 24 discount brokers for broker-assisted trades of 100 shares at $50 dollars per share can be found in the file Broker2.xlsx on K-State online. We will demonstrate how to use Excel to compute the mean, median, etc. To use Excel to compute the mean commission: 1. Open the file Broker2.xlsx. 2. Click on a blank cell in the spreadsheet. 3. Type in the cell the following: = average(B2:B25) This computes the average of the numbers in cells B2-B25. 1

Unformatted text preview: 1. Click on a blank cell in the spreadsheet. 2. To compute the p th percentile, type = percentile(B2:B25, p /100) in the blank cell. To compute the 35th percentile for commission type = percentile(B2:B25,35/100) or = percentile(B2:B25,0.35) 3. Press Enter. To use Excel to compute the quartiles: 1. Click on a blank cell in the spreadsheet. 2 2. To compute Q i type the following in the cell = quartile(B2:B25, i ) So for the rst quartile: = quartile(B2:B25,1) For the third quartile: = quartile(B2:B25,3) Note : What you obtain from Excel for percentiles and quartiles may be slightly dierent that what you obtain doing these calculations by hand. Dierent computer programs frequently have slightly dierent formulas for computing percentiles and quartiles. Now using the information from Excel to make a boxplot by hand: 3...
