Solutions to Homework 10 Problem 9.1 a. The hypotheses are H 0 : μ 600 H a : μ > 600 The alternative hypothesis should correspond to the claim that the bills have been increasing ( μ > 600). b. If H 0 cannot be rejected, then it is possible that the production line is filling cartons correctly. There is no evidence that the production line is not operating properly. Allow the production process to continue. c. If H 0 can be rejected, then we conclude that the production line should be shut down (i.e. the underfilling or overfilling is occurring). Problem 9.7 a. The hypotheses are: H 0 : μ 8000 H a : μ > 8000 b. A Type I error is when H 0 is true but we reject H 0 in our hypotheses test.
