Granular Leucocytes [have membrane bound cytoplasmic granules]

1) Polymorphonuclear neutrophils 40-70% - stains pale lilac cytoplasm - usually 3-lobed nucleus (segmented) - attack and destroy invading bact. (some fungi, etc.) - diapedesis - chemotaxis - phagocytosis 2) Polymorphonuclear eosinophils 2-4% - stains bright red cytoplasm - nucleus like old-fashioned telephone (2-lobed with connecting band) - present in mucosa of G.I. tract and lungs - help dissolute old clots with profibrinolysin - allergic reactions - enter inflamed areas to clean up remaining debris - increase in # with parasitic invasions 3) Polymorphonuclear basophils 0-1 % - cytoplasm stains blue or purple - U- or S-shaped nucleus with 2 or 3 conspicuous constrictions - heparin, histamine, bradykinin, serotonin
