Lab 14 Survey of Embryonic Development Exercise 44 Sperm are highly viable for only 12-24 hours (but fertile for 24-72 hours) Egg cells are maximally fertilizable for only 8-12 hours (max. 24 hours) Sperm must remain in the female’s reproductive tract for a period of time for them to undergo capacitation [acrosome with hyaluronidase] Fertilization occurs in the top 1/3 of the uterine tubes. Structure of the ovulated ovum: oocyte zona pellucida corona radiate A. Egg Penetration B.
