Chapter 16: Organizations and Technological Change We’re born in organizations, we die in them. * Technology as a Cause of Organizational Structure -- The technology used by an organization sets its structure -- If machines are not specialized, the workers have more autonomy (i.e textile machines are so efficient that workers are just “minders”) -- But chemical industries require deeper worker involvement. Their work cannot be strictly scheduled or regulated, so They enjoy more autonomy. -- Some jobs require many managers – Assembly line = many -- A few firms determine the cars we drive, the way steel is made, the operation system we use with computers. Also aerospace firms determine the specialized parts they need. -- Organizations are powerful tools for achieving goals. A technology may be selected, not because of its innate superiority, but be- cause it meets the needs of the power holders of that organizations -- Waste and inefficiency if little communication between the shop floor and design room.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
